Grown in Tochigi Prefecture Japan for ceremonial use, this “hemp” (it’s all the same plant cultivated toward different ends) is incredibly strong and catches light beautifully.
I separate the raw bundled fibres into individual strands as thin as spider webbing, cluster them together with bees wax and insert into the maple wood rod. Over and over and over.
The maple wood and brass hanger is hand-made and therefore customizable.
Size is also customizable and shapes both the time it takes to make as well as the pricing.
Piece pictured here, priced at $605CDN, is 10” wide by 17” long and took me 20 hours to make.
